I Survived (Mostly) Marufo Vega!
« on: April 02, 2009, 09:27:37 PM »
Well...at least part of it! Hiked in to Split Rock Tuesday night and back out Wednesday morning. Tough hike...at least for me. 40 pound pack weight didn't help! Lots of gaining and then giving up altitude. Spectacular sunset made it (mostly) worthwhile.

I also visited two other places I had never been to...the Oak Spring trail above the Window and Top of Burrow Mesa Pour off.

Weather was interesting all week with some fierce winds off and on. Last night it was blowing 40+ mph in the Basin...kept coming in waves!

I'll try to post a full report this weekend. Gotta catch up here at home and go through 200+ pictures!

Bill, you guys who go solo out onto the trails of Big Bend, in the more remote areas and zone camp, impress the heck out of me regardless of how far you make it.  How many folks did you see on your hike once you got down the trail?

Hi Al!
Nothing impressive about what I did...stayed right on the trail until I got to the camp site. What worried me most was doing something dumb, like spraining an ankle, on the way in. If that had happened, no one would come looking for me for at least 48 hours. Sobering thought when you're way out there!

I didn't see a single person from the time I left the parking area Tuesday morning until the time I returned to the parking area the next day. Truly out there all alone. :icon_eek:

Yeah, the imagination can really dredge up some strange things out there.

"Only" 200+ pics?  Bill, you need to excercise your trigger finger.  Bring'em on!

One quick pic that really could have been taken anywhere...just grabbed it to make sure I could handle RAW files okay.

You're just being nice tj! I want to work with this one using layers to see if I can enhance the ring you can just barely see in this version. I've never done any processing using layers so I have a learning curve ahead.

Here's one that actually shows a view, albeit of Mexico, from BB.

I know what you mean about being out there all alone without seeing another person for days.  It is good therapy as it teaches you to rely only on yourself.  It's a humbling thought to know you are out in the middle of nowhere all by yourself and if you screw up the buzzards will find you long before the rangers do!   But then that's what makes it exciting!   TWWG

Still pulling out pics from the trip. Here's a different ocotillo-in-the-forground shot.

How about some of the Splitrock Campsite?  Or the metal sign marking the junction of the North and South Forks that I somehow missed on my one and only backpacking trip on the Vega Trail - I was planning to take the North Fork down and wandered a good mile past the junction before pulling my head out (with a loud popping sound  :eusa_doh: :eusa_doh:) and doubling-back only to find I had walked right by the rusted sign mounted on a large boulder because I was daydreaming and looking up at the cliff ramparts just totally lost in my own little geologic wonderland  :eusa_dance: :eusa_clap:  This is a great cool-weather overnight backpack and there is reliable and plentiful water you can filter out of the Rio Grande..
