Made it back alive!
« on: August 18, 2010, 08:34:39 PM »
We just returned from our first successful BIBE adventure.
I will try to post a full report later.
For now, I will try to post a few photos. (otherwise Homero will just ask for some. . . .)
Remember, I am nowhere near the caliber of most picture takers on this site.
  (I hope this works)

Congratulations and welcome back!  I think your photos are great and you are just being modest!  :icon_biggrin:

I can't wait to see more!!!!!

I see you made it to one of my favorite places, the South Rim.  I really look forward to making that hike again, only this time I will spend a couple of nights up there.

I also noticed you shot those with a Canon Powershot ... those little cameras are just amazing.  I finally broke down and bought one this past weekend to keep in my car for those unexpected, unprepared, moments.  Actually, it was because I was going fishing and didn't want to risk my expensive camera on a boat, haha.

Thanks for the kind words, but . . .
No, I really am not being modest... my technique is to take a whole lot of pictures, then go back and pick out the 4 or 5 good ones that just "turn out"
And this was my first real outing with the powershot. It sure impressed me. And it is small enough to put in the outside pocket of my shorts so as to be ready whenever I saw something interesting.
If you want to see more of my photos from this trip, there are about 80 more (80 out of 683) at:

Thanks for the other photos!  The Rim is sure an amazing place and it looks like you captured it very well!  :icon_biggrin:

I couldn't tell what the bird was that was flying up there.  Was it a Peregrine?

And that is exactly how professional photographers operate. You never see the junk they shoot so they present the illusion of greater skill than actually exists. If you don't explain what you are doing or draw attention to your tossers, everyone will think the same of your images.

Nice job on the pics.  I follow the same logic, bring along plenty of SD cards and plan on deleting about 70% of the shots when I get back home and begin editing.

On a side note, I sure would like to get the opportunity to see the view from the South Rim without the smog/haze in the air.  Probably would rival the view from the top of Wheeler Peak, NM.

Looking forward to the trip report but it looks like you made full use of the Chisos staying at Laguna Meadows, NE4 and Toll Mtn.

No ascent of Emory Peak though.  Nice documentation of water running out of the pipe at Boot Spring.

Thanks

Actually we did hike up Emory Peak the first day, I just did not climb up the last 25 feet up the boulders.
My hiking partner talked me out of the last climb. I think it was wise to not take a chance and falling.
I am okay with climbing up heights, but the climbing down part might have been an issue.
There are some shots on my photobucket from up there.

The bird in my pictures was not  a peregrine, it was black.
I did see one when I climbed up the hill to the rim above SW3,
but it was too far away by the time I got my camera out.

thanks for the pictures  :eusa_clap: and glad you enjoyed yourself the first time out!....and I 'm sure  it won't be your last time out there.

the climb down from the top of Emory always seems easier and quicker than going up....and I have a huge respect for high places (read: used to be terrified to stand on a chair :icon_eek:)

The bird in th picture sure looks like a raven to me! We always enjoy watching them play on the wind currents up on the rim.

I did the same thing when I climbed Emory.  That last 25 feet was enough exposure to make me rethink going to the very top.  My wife was ready to scramble up there, but I talked her out of it.  She has less fear of heights than I !  :)

I just made it back on the 22nd and there were in fact a good number of hummingbirds out and about. I even saw a huge hummer that I really wish I could've snapped a picture of. Great pictures FatPacker! Looks like you had a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing! :)

I didn't see your report! Drop me a line with the link if you get a chance, otherwise I'll run a search when I get home in a bit. Whatever the case, owls in flocks??? Flocks of giant hummingbirds??? Awesome! Can't wait to read this!
