Upper Burro, Ward Spring, and an Eclipse
« on: December 21, 2015, 04:44:17 PM »

Went to the Bend in April 2014 to shoot the total lunar eclipse, and to do some night shooting in general as I hadn't done anything like that in a while.
First half-day, scouted a shooting location, then climbed up Hamburger Hill to shoot a timelapse...

Toys

The night was overcast, so there was nothing to shoot. The next day, haven't been on the Upper Burro Mesa yet, so I went...

That night, still overcast. The next day, went out to Ward Spring and to the spring past it...

The further to the second "spring-like" location. No spring was found but something is feeding this area - so lush and green... and a massive dike wall...

Returned via a different route, and ran into the Mother Of All Dikes...

I will come back to explore this further... but for now I had to get back for the eclipse, as the forecast called for clearing skies... finally!

Three tripods, three cameras under Casa Grande just off the Lost Mine Trail. The clear skies were accompanied by bitter cold and harsh winds. The tripods were set low with rocks piled around the legs to keep them from moving. Did I mention it was cold? Two cameras to zoom, and one creating a timelapse of the event...

The next day, I didn't do anything because I didn't get finished with the shoot until 6:30 am, and then it took me all day to thaw out! Did I mention the cold?

Next, next day, went back out the the Wall of Morder and scramble up the wash to where the dike first protrudes from the mountainside...

The vultures were circling...

Climbed up a pour-over below The Wall and headed up the wash...

It was a good trip, weather was iffy - but had near perfect conditions for the primary objective.

Nice.
Having decent gear is nice, but wildlife photography is knowing your subject and getting lucky, and I love getting lucky.

The multiple exposure of the eclipse at the 4:43 mark of the video would make a great calendar pic.
Wake me when it's time to go.

Awesome stuff. Definitately a few calendar worthy shots in the video (particularly like the Casa Grande sunset at 1:45 or so). The blended lunar eclipse shot would look great in the 2017 calendar.
