anyone ever camp in the eastern edge of this zone?  it looks like a super easy hike Terrain and elevation change) from 118 into the desert.  is it as it appears?

As we ramp up to the permit fee in Jan 2007, I am hoping to vastly improve the amount of backcountry prep material we have available, and eventually plan to provide both a listing of the zones and their capacities, but also a map.

Back in the 80's we got permits two years in a row to camp in the "no overnight camping zone" just to the east of W07. Much to our surprise, the third year we were told, "You can't get a permit to zone camp there!"  So we started camping around Elephant Tusk. 

It is a great area to explore.  We did what you are probably thinking.  We would park the truck and hike in about a mile or so and set up a base camp behind a hill and then day hike to the south where there is all kinds of neat stuff to see. It was easy to spend 3 or four days out there, especially since it was a pretty easy hike back to the truck to restock.  I recommend it.

our plan is to do something very similar to what you are describing.  even down to the place where i hope to set up our base camp.

it's funny how i think about this all day long, and can't wait until i get out there.  only 3 weeks to go.

BB, this is a rarely visited area in the park. Your trip report will be unique and quite special.  I'll look forward to sharing notes upon your return, although mine have faded, will be error prone and pale in comparison.
